The QOF is optimistic in regards of the 2008 caribou hunting season in Schefferville
February 1st, 2008 – The Quebec Outfitters Federation (QOF) is pleased regarding the results of the discussions that took place this week between the Innus of Matimekush – Lac John and official government representatives. It seems that this meeting was welcomed by both parties and that they both are looking at promising development for the future.
Last fall, the Innus spoke out about illegal outfitting activities and non-ethical use of planes while conducting hunting activities. The government representatives have stated to the Innus that regulation already exists on wrongful use of planes and illegal outfitters, and that these regulations will be enforced and eventually changed if need be.
The QOF and outfitters operating from the Schefferville area already expressed their desire to actively participate in the problem solving process and wish to inform the government and the Innus that they intend to soon be in Schefferville to meet with them and discuss possible solutions. Outfitters believe that a Code of Ethics and a tightened surveillance is needed in order to satisfy and respect everybody’s needs.
The QOF and its outfitter members maintain their communications with the Quebec government in regards of the claim filed following the events of last fall in Schefferville. We soon should be noticed of the government’s decision in that matter.
