Bas-Saint-Laurent (01)
This region, which encompasses the St. Lawrence River Estuary, covers an immense area, extending as far south as the Maine and New Brunswick borders. To the west lies the Chaudière-Appalaches region, and to the east lies Gaspésie, a region the Bas-Saint-Laurent is often associated with. Region 01 contains a range of natural habitats: fresh and salt water marshes, boreal forests, rocky islets and numerous picturesque lakes. Main sportfish are speckled trout and Atlantic salmon. Great hunting, thanks to the large local population of moose and ruffed grouse. Families looking for a vacation destination that is easy to get to and not too far from Québec City will be thrilled with the tourist offer in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region.
Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean (02)
Throngs of tourists visit the Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean region (administrative region 02) every year, drawn to Lake Saint-Jean, a veritable inland sea, and the Saguenay Fjord, the only such geographical feature in North America that can be safely navigated by boat. Region 02 is bordered by the Côte-Nord and Charlevoix (Capitale-Nationale) regions and covers an area measuring 100 000 km2 (40 000 sq. Mi.). Game animals and sportfish include grouse, hare, moose, black bear, pike, whitefish, walleye, landlocked salmon, lake trout and speckled trout. It is worth mentioning the outfitters located in the Valin Mountains have access to the world’s largest natural reservoir of brook trout! In addition to hunting and fishing, several recreational activities or sports may be practiced in the mountains, on the plateaus or on the plains in the region. Québec/Charlevoix (03)
The Capitale-Nationale region covers an area stretching from north of the St. Lawrence River to Grondines in Baie-Sainte-Catherine. Charlevoix, which is part of this region, is without a doubt the most popular tourist destination in Québec and is the one with the highest concentration of outfitters in the province. Culture and the pristine wilderness are major attractions in Charlevoix. With its lakes teeming with speckled trout and mixed forests that are home to large a moose, black bear and ruffed grouse population, the region draws large numbers of fishers and hunters. Named a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the outfitting tourist offer in Charlevoix includes the great outdoors, the St. Lawrence River, quaint villages, good restaurants, the Parc des Hautes-Gorges-de-la-rivière-Malbaie and a range of seasonal activities.
Mauricie (04)
The Mauricie region (administrative region 04) is located in the middle of the province, halfway between Montréal and Québec City, and bordered to the south by the St. Lawrence River. The region is 40 000 km2 (15 385 sq. Mi.) of lakes, mountains and forests that lend themselves perfectly to a vacation in the great outdoors. About fifty outfitters can be found here. They can accommodate individual fishers, small families, groups of friends and corporate clients seeking to combine business with pleasure. Mauricie is among the regions with the greatest variety in terms of activities offered. Estrie (05)
The Estrie region (administrative region 05) comprises a broken landscape and a ramified network of lakes and rivers favouring recreational tourism. Located less than an hour from Montréal and a few hours from Québec City, the Estrie region stretches all the way to the American border (Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont). Located in the southwestern tip of Québec, only a few hours from downtown Ottawa-Gatineau, the Outaouais region (administrative region 07) extends as far as the Ottawa River. Its magnificent deciduous forests are home to black bears, moose and deer, making this region very popular with big game hunters. Sportfishers can take advantage of the more than 20 000 lakes and dozens of rivers in the area, where they can catch pike, walleye, trout and bass. Abitibi-Témiscamingue (08)
Abitibi-Témiscamingue (administrative region 08) is a vast region located north-west of Québec City. Its sheer expanse and the beauty of its bodies of water appeal to hunters, fishers and outdoor enthusiasts. This region is renowned for its diverse landscape; the conifer forests in the north, mixed forests in the centre and deciduous forests in the south are home to moose, black bear and small game. The diversity of the region’s natural resources also applies to its bodies of water, in which can be found such species as walleye, speckled trout, lake trout and pike. Families travelling to an outfitter in Abitibi-Témiscamingue will enjoy their stay at a site reasonably close to the provincial capital that offers a wide range of activities. The second largest region in Québec, the Côte-Nord region (administrative region 09) comprises the largest hunting and fishing territory in the province. Nord-du-Québec (10)
The Nord-du-Québec region (administrative region 10) stands out, owing to its abundant natural resources and pristine, though grippingly different, landscape that everyone should see at least once in their lives! The Nord-du-Québec region is first and foremost the hunting grounds for the largest migratory land animal in the province: the caribou. About thirty outfitters provide this type of adventure hunting. The region’s many lakes and rivers offer great fishing for salmon, lake trout, Arctic char and speckled trout, some of which can grow to an impressive size. Gaspésie (11)
The Gaspésie region (administrative region 11) is located on the easternmost tip of the province and is probably the most popular tourist destination in Québec. Outfitters in Gaspésie offer salmon fishing, moose hunting, recreational activities and expeditions into the mountains or out to sea, as well as conventional tourist attractions. Chaudière-Appalaches (12)
The Chaudière-Appalaches region (administrative region 12) is located south of Québec City. Approximately fifteen outfitters draw large numbers of hunters, fishers and outdoor enthusiasts, who appreciate the fact this region is so close to the provincial capital. While tracking white-tailed deer, hunters can admire the Appalachians, a mountain range with peaks reaching more than 900 m (2970 feet) into the sky. Bird watching on the banks of the St. Lawrence River is a popular spring and fall activity. Many hiking, snowmobiling and quad trails wind across the region. Outfitters along the trails play host to those travelling on these routes through the wilderness.
Lanaudière (14)
The Lanaudière region (administrative region 14) stretches from the Laurentian Plateau to the St. Lawrence River. Roughly fifteen outfitters can be found in the region, with its deciduous forests and countless streams and lakes that are home to the most popular sportfish in southern Québec. Speckled trout and rainbow trout are an angler’s dream. Game animals include moose, black bears, hares, ruffed grouse and ducks. Many snowmobiling and quad trails criss-cross the area. Extreme athletes will be able to practice their favourite sports here as well. Only a few dozen kilometres from Montréal, the Lanaudière region is perfect to explore the beauty of nature and go ice fishing.
Laurentides (15)
Located north-west of Montréal, the Laurentides region (administrative region 15) is the leisure destination of choice for Montrealers, owing to its highly developed recreational facilities. The Laurentides region is renown for its resorts and fishing and hunting packages, boasting over 35 outfitters, most of which are in the Upper Laurentians. Walleye, speckled trout and pike are the major sportfish caught in the area. Big game animals, like the black bear, moose and white-tailed deer, are hunted here. The spectacular fall colours in the region’s deciduous forests draw many visitors. Local outfitters agree that the forests are as equally attractive bedecked in a cloak of wintery white—a snowmobile ride into the woods will confirm this. A must-see!
Montérégie (16)
The Montérégie region (administrative region 16) is situated near Montréal and encompasses part of the St. Lawrence Plains. As human settlement is so widespread in this region, only a few outfitters are found here, mainly offering white-tailed deer hunting, river fishing, camping and several outdoor activities. If you do not have a lot of time to spend travelling, contact one of the outfitters in the Montérégie region.
